Hello!

Welcome to this brand new adventure that I am embarking on! Am I nervous? ABSO-FRICKEN-LUTLEY! Am I excited? ABSO-FRICKEN-LUTLEY!

So first and foremost welcome to Oats, Dates & Honey Cakes!

My name is Monica. Hi! Nice to meet you…virtually! Food has been the main passion in my life for as long as I can remember. I worked in the food industry for quite a few years. Although I didn’t have the best experiences, I learned a lot about what not to do. Knowing what not to do can sometimes be even more important than what you should do!

After several years at a couple of different jobs and truly exploring my passion for pastries, I tried twice to get into the baking program in my hometown. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the best luck. When I wasn’t able to get into the program, I decided to start in the hospitality program to get started. Jump ahead a couple years later and I was calling every bakery in town to see if they were hiring. This way, I could get into the apprenticeship program. I still had no luck.

Thankfully in 2014, my dreams finally came true! After constantly picking myself back up and brushing off the dust, I entered into a pastry program in Vancouver, BC. It was not only a lot of work, but it was a surreal experience. To top it all off: I got to spend lots of time with Grandma!

After graduation and working at a few different jobs in my field, I realized that working in the industry was not quite for me. That said…I love food! It fuels and inspires me like nothing else in my life (obviously other then my future hubby-to-be).

That brings us here: my new adventure! I am someone who has always made everything from scratch. So – if you have a sweet tooth, love comfort food and want to use real ingredients, then keep coming back to see new posts and recipes! This is where you’ll want to be!
